SmartMH is a initiative led by Next Step, a national affordable housing nonprofit focused on using factory-built housing as a solution to the housing crisis facing the United States. The SmartMH program is a joint veture between Next Step, Freddie Mac, and eHome America, and aims to bring housing counseling and homebuyer education services to buyers of manufactured or modular housing in underserved and rural markets. Factory-built housing is often cheaper than site-built in rural markets, where land development costs may use a more significant part of the available purchasing funds.
This design makes maximum use of available photos of quality factory-built homes to clearly and beautifully outline the program goals and guidelines to a wide variety of potential partners in the industry. These partners may be factory-built housing retailers, traditional mortgage lenders and banks, housing counseling agencies and housing nonprofits, state trade associations, etc.
A key challenge in this design was conveying all the relevant information to many possible audiences in a "one-stop-shop" approach, while keeping costs low. This was achieved with an A4 landscape design that gives the content breathing room and makes use of available high resolution photos of the product. The booklet was saddle-stitched and printed on a heavyweight paper with a high gloss finish.
